- Dagashiya penny candy stores and Monja
-
-
At the end of the Meiji era, most snacks sold at Dagashiya penny candy stores in downtown Tokyo had nothing more than flour dissolved in water with an added flavor.
Then, people started eating a variety of ingredients, such as squid and cabbage dipped in soy sauce and honey, these became popular with children and this was the beginning of “Monja”.
- Name and history of Monja
-
-
Children were taught by writing letters (Moji in Japanese) on an iron plate, due to which Monya yaki initially came to be called “Moji yaki”, which changed to “Monji yaki” and eventually became “Monja yaki”.
Monjayaki also has other names at different places, such as “Irohayaki”, “Mizuyaki”, “Bottayaki”, and “Obettayaki” etc.
Healthy whole wheat flour is used.
